Default Crank Fatigue Failure?

I read an article in a performance rag about crank shafts. As an engineer I am aware of the principles of fatique. I am also aware that it is possible to design metal parts to withstand an infinite number of cyclical stress loading understanding that this approach may not always be economical. The conclusion of this article is if you have a crank that has been around for awhile you are on borrowed time till failure occurs. How common are busted cranks in our older vetts??
