Insane? stupid? need advice/feedback
the '82 tranny is fubar. it's looking like 1200 to rebuild it. a friend of a friend
(yeah, I know) said that if I come up with a tranny, he will convert th car from auto to manual :D which is what I really would like to do..
first thing is, should i trust a backyard mechanic to do this kind of work? (my gut says no way) second, if I were to do so, am I limited to the 79-81 model year 4 speeds, or is it possible to put in a 5 or 6 speed from a C4/5 or maybe a camaro/firebird? if it IS doable to go with a 5 speed, would I need the linkage from a 81 or the linkage from the doner car? this concerns me since the doner would almost surely be a wrecked camaro.
advice and comments desired, and even some moderate flamage..
BTW the guy said he would do the swap for $300 if i provided the parts

Tough call. I know some backyard mechanics that do beautiful work, and others that I wouldn't let fill my car up with gas. How well do you know the guy? Myself, I would want more than $300 to pull an auto and replace with manual to make it worth my while. My guess is the guy is real good or real bad, no middle of the road here. :cheers:

If he is asking for 1200 to rebuild the 82 transmission, DO NOT LET HIM TOUCH YOUR CAR. Linke he said, some guys DO do beautiful work, though. Like me :D :cheers:

Well so it seems, the '82 vette trannies did not escape the fate of the early 700r4's in they are all junk, so the way to go, apparently, is getting a later say '87 up tranny, and rebuilding it.....NOT from a C4 as the tailshaft is differant, and un useable....this is basically the cheapest best way to go....
changing to a stick shift is nice, but basically impossible.....the amount of work involved just getting the clutch pedal in there, and shifter to fit the console correctly is a bit much....you gotta be REAL picky which tranny you use, and buying a new one is not worth it.....

all the tranny shops in town started at $700 for a "soft" rebuild, and they went up from there. I would love to replace the 700R4 since it is, indeed a piece of crap. I really am at a loss as to my options
