Hey Jonathan,
I think the backspacing is WAY too deep to fit a C3 with stock trailing arms. I just went through a bunch of :bs for the last two weeks to get some beefier rubber under the back of my '70. I wanted to run 295/50 15's on the back for more of a retro look. I went through all kinds of wheels, backspacers and billet adapters, none of which looked right or seemed safe. I finally wound up going with 10 inch rallys with a 3 7/8 back space and it looks terrific. No spacer plates and I still have about 5/8 inch of clearance for my trailing arm. I wasn't dealing with anywhere near the offset the C4 wheels have. I agree they would probably look bitchin' if you got them on there, but I'm sure you'll need to step up to the offset trailing arms.
Good luck, Greg

They're probably running the offset trailing arms and billet adapters. I agree, someone here must have them and should chime in.

I have 17x9.5's on the rear of my car. I am using the 2.75" VBP adapters.
EDIT: and stock trailing arms. I didn't even move the e-brake cable.

I'm in the process of doing my rear wheels now. I did 17" with 255/45/17 up front and it clears just barely. I was going to use the same size rim for the rear. I relocated my parking brake bracket to the top of the trailing arm and the 17" rim did fit but the leaf spring just barely touched the inside of the rim with the car jacked up. It cleared just fine with the car on the ground. I sent the 17" rims back and I'm going with 18" rims so I don't have to worry about it any more. I'm planning on running 275 on the rear.

Mine fit all the way around with VB adaptors.....i did have to grind off some of the e-brake bracket though.
