Default Hey guys have a question for you...

This is not about me, but the question came up and I thought I would ask you guys.
You help a friend replace a part on his car, lets use the steering pump as an example. You are not being paid nothing it was just to help this person out. While taking the part out of the car you accidentally break something.
Do you feel obligated to pay for the new part???
Or if your the owner do you feel like you should be paid for the "new" part.

Ok lets hear from ya...

Owner pays unless you do something REALLY stupid.

I helped a friend replace a water pump once and he got pissed at me becuase the old bolts where breaking off in the block. Not my fault, I would have like too see him do better.

I wouldnt ask a friend to pay for something, and if I muffed something up I would probably offer to replace it. But thats just me.

I'd say that all depends on each persons personality. Some people just don't get it.. I try to stay clear of situations that could lead to arguments. I also have an issue with "I helped you so now you owe me one" I don't ask favors from those types. I don't expect paybacks when I do someone a favor...I usually get a payback ... not necessarily from the same person. Now if I have a temper tantrum and screw up something ...that's different.

The owner of the car took a risk. You shouldn't pay for the new part. What would Jesus do?

My thoughts are this : If the guy getting the help saved a few bucks with the help that was given, then he bears the risk of the helper breaking something and having to replace it. At that point he schould understand that you mostly get what you pay for. Thats the risk of getting things for free , it just might cost you more. Also the guy who broke the part schould at least help repair the new one and try not to break anything else.

Personally, I'd feel obligated to pay only if it was through negligence on my part. If it was "just one of those things" I'd try an equitable compromise.
Just so ya know, whenever I break something on my own car, I don't hold you guys responsible, even though it is usually your DIY example which inspired me to attempt it! :jester

My friends would NEVER think of asking me to pay for something I broke while helping them out but on the other hand I would insist on paying for it. Thats how true FRIENDS stay friends

Do you feel obligated to pay for the new part???
Depends on how much you like the person, or how large their bra size is :D

:iagree: Do favors for people not expecting a return and not for recognition and someday you'll be repaid BIG :blueangel: . The One who matters sees it even if no one else does. (nudge nudge, say no more! yes I am referring to GOD)

Tony... Tell him he owes YOU $1500. TO RENT your technical expertise is $2000 PER DAY and just because you are "friends" you will take $500 off for the FAULTY PART that broke.

Really, not too good a friend if he is being an ASP over this one.... I don't care what the part is....

my history on this subject... I CUT MY FRIENDS MIDDLE FINGER OFF WHILE WORKING ON MY VETTE.... (crowbar slipped... OOPS!). After a year later, he still helps me. .... He WEARS GLOVES NOW... but helps me. Oh yeah, everyone here at WORK calls him STUBBY!!

I would help him find a replacement part and installation.

But if he had gotten an attitude like 77dream said, he can take his bolts and stick em where the sun doesn't shine.

 Sorry to ask, how did that happen? And since I can't resist, did he insist you pay him for his finger?

HAHAAA.... Brian and I were lifting the body off the frame and #2 was stuck... I inserted a crow bar under the body from the engine bay. Brian was "holding" the bar through the side louver area. The bar slipped when I was "bouncing" on it and the heat shield on the fire wall snagged the top 1/3 of his middle finger. WHACK... and the top fell on the ground. I put him in my BRAND NEW E320 sport and my wife drove us to the hositpal. He is better now. What a friend huh....? I didn't even think about the blood on in my new car... ha haaa. His finger is 100% better... a little shorter... but better.

... I bitched at him to wear gloves and he said... "come on... let's go... what is the worst that could happen...."
