Reassurance, please.
Just installed a 6-qt. Moroso deep-sump oil pan, a new oil pump with the "correct" pickup already welded on from Summit and a Fel-Pro one-piece gasket.
Dry-fitting the thing, however, gave me some concern. Just holding it up by hand, my little clay ball only crushes to 5/8" thickness. It's only off my personal comfort zone by about 1/4" inch.
The one-piece gaskets are significantly thicker than the cork ones I used to use. somebody tell me the extra 1/4" or so of pickup clearance is because the pan hasn't been bolted down yet and that the gasket and/or new pan hasn't taken a set.

I could see the gasket squishing by 1/8"

If it's truly the thick gasket that's causing the pickup not to go down far enough in the pan you could always compensate by running an extra 1/2 quart of oil. Just a thought.

I seriously doubt you will have a problem the way it is. After all yur running a deep sump with and extra qt to boot. Just dont run it low and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the ideas. I usually like to see oil pump pickups around 3/8" or so off the bottom of the sump, but I suppose if I keep an eyeball on it and maintain the level at or a little higher than the full mark on the dipstick I'll be OK.
I just don't want to do this again--I really dislike working with engine sheet metal.

Since the dipstick measures where the top of the oil is positioned (whether the oil pan is 1 inch or 3 feet deep), I wouldn't overfill. That could be worse for your engine...

And, as the system is designed to have the usual crud drop to the very bottom of the sump, you don't want to be sucking off the very bottom anyway.
