Window tinting - 1978-1982 owners - rear window.
I want to get my rear window in my 1980 tinted, but have a small worry.
When I got my truck done, I had them go with the 5% tint in the back window. We use the metal films out here. They are higher $$$, but the dyed films only last 6 months in the Arizona sun before they turn purple. In the truck with the dark film I have a problem with it becoming a mirror. When I look in the rear view mirror, I see a reflection of what is in front of me being reflected by the window tint.
Do anyone of you have that problem with the rear window in the late C3's ?? I don't want to get a big problem with visibility out the back of the Vette at night. Also, how dark of a window tint did you go with ?

I am in the same boat, tired of the Texas sun making my AC work so hard to keep this rolling oven cool. When I talked to the guy about doing my '80, I was shocked to hear that he did not want to to do metal film on the back window. He said he could do it, but with metal, he would have to do it as two pieces versus the one piece he could do with regular tint. I really like the look of the metal tints. I would like to match them as close to the T-tops as possible but now this guy has me thinking going metal is not the way to go.
As for the reflections you mention, I have not noticed it yet in my Vette but I am still overstimulated with all the other things going on in my car. (noises, creeks, groans, etc.) I will follow this thread to see what others say.

mid america has a tinted lexan, that can be be put in or taken back out ,for $99.oo .that is what i would like to go with .we dont get the hot sun like you get but it would be enough for me,it would also help with the headlights from tailgaters at night.

I would never do a dyed film on my car out here. With in 6 months they start to turn purple and with in 2 years they breakdown and tear and blister, even if professionaly installed. I will do the metal, but I am only worried about the reflection if I go with a dark tint such as 5%.
The local shop has this new film that is almost no tint at all but has the highest heat and uv reflection of any tint. But to have a car done is around $1200.00 vs. $150-$180.

My 94 has the reflective "mirror" tint on the backglass. You can not see inside through it, but when looking out of it through from the inside, it doesn't mirror at all.

I am guessing since the dark tint on your C4 does not have a reflection issue on the inside that the C3 probably won't either.

when i had my 79 i tinted mine with limo tint, very dark i couldnt see out it at night but i had no mirror reflection back at you during the day.I have limo tint now on my 73 and i cant see anything out of it from the mirror.i guess because its flat and the 79 was concave.

I would think that the slope of the back window wouldnt reflect anything from in front of you, only things that are in the rear storage area. I have a dark tint and never have problems with reflection.

I have 5% on all my windows and haven't encountered any mirror effect. I think it's great (I run 5% on all my cars) and well worth it. I used to live in AZ and I can appreciate the need for tinted windows.

:iagree:
I live in South Texas- plenty of sunshine here too.
My daily driver was tinted in 98 with 3M tint. it looks as good today as it did then. I would look around for the best quality tint and try to get a lifetime warranty.
