Default Steel Spring or Fiberglass?

Rear spring is my next project for my '80. Should I have it rebuilt/adjusted or replace it with a fiberglass one. Simply looking for the best ride.

This is one of the things Im chewing on also.
Ill probably go for the fiberglass. Keep the steel in the closet.
Ill probably change my mind again in a few months.
Nest big project is rear wheel bearings.

9 out of 10 you'll have ride height issues w/ the glass spring. Mine sits like a 4X4 in the rear. I'm going back to a steal spring becuase even with the lowering bolts it sits at 30".

In fact, that's one of my major concerns. To my understanding '81 and up cars don't have the steel springs. They don't seem to have this problem.

My car had the fiberglass spring when I bought it. It was purchased from Ecklers in the early 90's. Both the front and rear suspension was rebuilt at around the same time. My car has some ride issues on the front end, but the rear feels like a brand new car. Check the link for ride height and other pictures. I'm really glad whoever built this car before I got it put the spring on it... I'm very happy with it!

80-82s with Gymkhana suspension have a steel spring so if you want steel for yours, you would probably need to buy this spring, which I have seen in a few of the vendor catalogs. I beleive it is 9 leaf and 2 1/2 inch wide wheras the earlier gymkhana springs were 7 leaf but only 2 1/4 inch wide.

I put the fglass spring on my 71. At first it looked like a stink bug with the rear end height problems.. :U
I bought the 10" bolts from Ecklers, and it lowered it right down to normal..It has a great ride now.. :hurray: :hurray:

Yes there is major weight reduction. Steel is 35lbs and fiberglass is 8lbs. I have TRW fiberglass springs for $248.99. 300lb 340lb and 355lb.

Tried the VB glass spring and couldn't make it stop bouncing. Switched to a late C3 2.5" wide steel spring and now it rides like it should.

What type of shocks are you using??? From what I hear, gas shocks are the only way to go with the fiberglass spring.

I tried KYB monotube (gas), KYB GR2 (revalved for glass springs, supposedly) and monroe sensatrack gas. All bounced.

Started with a 360 and then tried a 315 (not in their catalog, but sometimes they come out not quite @ spec so they found me one that had come out 'in-between'). The 315 rode better but bounced just as much.

VB 360lb glass spring with 8" bolts.Fender lip sits at 28" and has been solid as a rock for 8 years now.Wouldn't go back to steel for anything.
What's this with the bounce problem?

I recommend the 340. I have that one in my 1980 and it rides great. Make sure to get the longer mounting bolts and shocks made for the mono rear spring.
