That's neat. I remember watching him run Swamp Rat (I or II - can't remember) in Detroit in late '60's/early '70's. Great innovator!

Don Garlits ran a quarter mile top speed of 200.44 miles per hour at Detroit Dragway in July 1964 with Swamp Rat VIB. There were a lot of "optimistic" speeds that were being bragged about at that time with one or two cars claiming to have broken the 200 mph barrier. Detroit Dragway had recently calibrated Chrondek timers that gave a lot of credibility to Don's speed.
BTW, I was there the day of the 200.44 mph run. It came on the third run of the day.
He then went out to New Jersey and turned a 201.34 speed. (It might have been a NHRA record).
Swamp Rats I and II were raced in the 1957 through 1961 time frames.
