What auto transmission in 1973 L-48 engine
What automatic transmission came in the 1973 with the L-48 standard engine. I am thinking about replacing with a Hughes performance transmission. Anyone know anything about the quality and reliability of the Hughes. I thought the L-48 came with the TH 400, but after talking to someone at Pace performance he said he thought it might be a TH350, but was not sure. I know you guys will know. I'm thi king about putting the Hughes behind a GM 350 H.O. Deluxe crate engine. What do you think?

All 73 came with a TH400, Why would you replace the trany its one of the best trany GM produced. If you are not upgrading to a 4-speed 700 then why bother replacing the 400 with another 3-speed

I'm new at this. That why I appreciate your guys opinions so much. I guess my thoughts were that the cost of a rebuild was around 600 and the new transmission was about 1000. That why I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Hughes Performance Transmissions. They are sold at a lot of reputable places like summit racing, pace performance and sallee chevrolet, so I figured they should be fairly good quality, but that is an assumption. I would like to know if anyone has heard anything about them or had personal experience with them.

IMO - Hughes makes excellent trans and converters. They stand up to heavy duty racing etc. But as the posts said as a recommendation keep the T400, it is a sturdy trans and for what you say 600 you can put in a shift kit and a converter and it will be a snappy unit. Good luck
