Default Should I pull the tranny with the motor??????

I'll be installing my new 383 in a couple weeks, and was told by a friend of mine who is a mechanic, that it would be easier to attach my tranny (4 speed, T10) to the new motor with it out of the car. But, he said that if there is enough room in front of where the motor sits to get the motor and tranny to align properly, than it'll be fine to leave the tranny in the car. What are your opinions/experiences

You can pull it out seperate, but I've always pull it out as one whole unit.

the key to success is a load leveler, in either case.
when you leave the trans in, you avoid dripping fluid, disconnecting the shifter, driveshaft.
That time saved is often wasted aligning the input shaft.(any pressure from hanging can bend/ruin the disc.) I leave the trans in, everyone else takes them together.
Flip a coin

I would pull it out in 1 piece, that way you can do some cleaning up under there. If you pull it out in 1 pice, I'd indeed suggest using a load leveler.

The engine and tranny go in and out in 1 piece without trouble. I've done a bunch of 'em, and you don't even need a load leveler - I usually have one of my Vette friends guide the tailshaft housing up above the crossmember using a floorjack on the bottom while I drop the motor in from the top. Piece of cake - it goes just fine.

The problem with doing it in 1 piece is that the shifter & shift linkage disassembly and re-assembly is a bit cumbersome. If you leave the tranny in the car, you'll save yourself some work and hassle with the shifter. If you use a tight-fitting clutch alignment tool when you bolt up the clutch/pressure plate to the flywheel, it's not tough engaging the tranny to the engine with the tranny in the car. So if you don't plan on doing any work to the tranny, and if you don't care about cleaning it up and detailing it out, I'd leave the tranny in the car and just pop the engine.

Doing it by myself I found it easier to leave the tranny in. I also jack up the rear tires off the ground so I can rotate the input shaft by slightly moving the rear tires, just a touch will mate up the input shaft splines with the disk splines. Also jack the tranny up all the way till it almost touches the trans tunnel, you need the tranny up that high so the motor mounts won't catch before the motor mates with the trans. Last thing I also recomend a load leveler, not absolutely needed but as with most good tools, it makes the job just a little easier.

So is it easier to align it with the tranny out or in  If I don't have to deal with the shifter linkage that's a plus. But, is it harder to align the motor/tranny with it in the car, or more of a hassle to play with the shifter linkage. I would like to detail in there, but it's not neccessary. Whichever is the lesser of two evils is the way I'll go

I just pulled and installed my engine and tranny in two pieces. What a PITA, next time I will install in one piece.

with a stick shift it may be easier to do it in one piece.

That's exactly what my friend said. 1 piece is easier for the stick shift, 2 is easier for the auto :smash:
