What is the correct finish for steerng box/column and clutch arm(piece that attatches to block, and master cylinder, etc? Should it be cast? Or painted? For a '68 vette.

If you are trying to be NCRS correct, the steering column jacket (the outer stamped steel shell) was painted semi gloss black before it was assembled into a steering column. It also had the lower plate that attaches to the floor pan welded in place when it was painted.

The parts on the lower end: the steering shaft that sticks out of the column was bare steel; the bearing retainer was zinc plated silver; the bearing retainer clip was also zinc plated.

Hope this helps,
