My Gas tank was imploded
Since I've owned my car it's only held about 8 gallons of gas. The vented cap failed or plugged along the line and the suction imploded the tank. It's sucked in on the top and bottom. The other problem with this is, other than the capacity issue, is with the bottom imploded the pipe from the sending unit sticks up at a different angle, so most of the gas (and about a gallon of water) in the tank never gets used. I'm driving it to Carlisle for the first time this year and want more gas, so for the sake of not running water through the new engine and actually having enough gas to make it somewhere on less than a full tank, I'm finally changing it.
Here are some pictures of the imploded tank, they don't do it justice, it's really worse than the pictures make it look. The new tank is in the background for comparison.

"The vented cap failed " ... uh-huh, sure, um, how big are the secondaries on that thing?
Good Luck with the change & have fun at Carlisle :yesnod:

Seems to me anyway, just repressuring the tank to blow it back out again would work, assuming it's not a sea of rust anyway....

One of my Vette freinds put a new Holley fuel pump on his 65 and his old cap failed. The suction completely imploded the tank. The bottom was sucked up against the filler neck, would not hold two gallons. I told him to write to Holley and tell them thier pumps really suck.......

Thanks for the comments folks. I guess the moral is, this can happen, and if you have a vented system, get a new cap periodically. It's cheaper and easier than pulling the tank.
As far as repressurizing the tank, it's actually creased in a couple of spots from the implosion. I wouldn't trust it afterwards. The new tank wasn't terrible as far as price goes. Also, I'm not using the Return line any more, so I got a tank without a nipple for a return line.
