Default AC Compressor Putting Alot Of Drag On Engine

At the redlights I have give to it gas or it will die. The idle goes way down to almost shutting down. Is this normal?

I used to have a '79 Z-28 that did this after I rebuilt engine and hotrodded it a bit. Part of my rebuild was to replace the Q-jet carb with a Holley. That is when my trouble started. As I recall, on the Q-jet there is an electric component that would make up for the A/C drag by upping the idle when the A/C was running. I am sure this available for the Holley as well but I was not smart enough to get it all back together back then. I am sure someone else here can give you the gory details, but that sounds like your problem to me.

:iagree: Yup, need a solenoid to up the idle when the a/c comes on. Or, you could increase the idle but it will be high when the a/c is not on.

Yep, I'll third that, you should be able to find the part for your carb to up the idle when the AC is on...
