I cut up my frame [Lots of PICS]
These pics are served from my home PC - over cable. The bandwidth is OK -
but not the fastest. If you get red Xs - try back in a while - or use the right
mouse button >> show picture.
Scratch that - I changed 'em to links - faster loading for now.
I started digging into my frame - the 70 that came with my chassis/rear clip.
The rear corners of the rails had been repaired by a previous owner.
I knew that. What I didn't know was the extent. The repairs turned out to be
a bit Bubba-ish. They had tack welded steel over the rotted areas and
skim-coated it with body seam sealer and undercoating.
I decided to fix it right. I cut all the rotted corners out - and will replace with
steel - butt welded in to look like original. I figure this set me back at least
two weeks from my already optimistic schedule. This sux - I really wanna
drive her this year !!! :cry :cry
First, let me explain that I dropped my digital cam a few weeks back - and
it now has trouble in sunlight. Bright spots get flourescent green/blue.
This is the case for my first pic of the old repairs. Note that the end cap
was repaired also - but I ripped that patch off with my bare hands.
Hulk no like patches !!!

The rest of the pictures were taken in the evening: much better.
I cut all of the rotted areas away. There is a little more I need to get that's
hiding under the gusset.

Now, here are some cool pics. The first one is looking into the crossmember
that supports the nose of the differential case. Not too bad - except for the
rust near the corner (closest to camera):

Looking into the frame rail. Note the weld nuts for the auto tranny crossmember:

Well - that's it for now. It's been raining daily here - so work on the frame
(outside) has been delayed. Watch for pics as I piece it all back together.

Re: I cut up my frame [Lots of PICS] (NHvette)
The pictures reminds me a Saturday Night Live skit where the green stuff is fecal matter and it's all over everything...
I just cut my frame too, but for a completely different reason. The coilovers needed clearance! Looks good so far, but we need finished pictures now too. Get to work and no more excuses.

Hope you have a good mig welder with gas , no flux core or stick here.
Looks like you are very thorough and I am sure you will do a good job and make it better then new.
Be sure to clean all rust off any surface before welding or it will contaminate the weld.
Good luck.

I see what you mean by "remover of rust - replacer of steel" Looks like you do nice work. I hope the rest of the frame is as strong as it needs to be. I had a '69 Caprice with a bad frame that I repaired, drove 1 year and the rest of the frame fell apart around the repairs  I guess thats what you get for working on $400 cars (i was 17 at the time)

In that first picture, it looks like Hulk cut himself getting ready to rip it apart.

"Bright spots get flourescent green/blue."
At 1st glance, I thought your frame was suffering from a nuclear overdose!
Good Work! :chevy
