Default Started backfiring...

Ever since I brought my car down to CA, it backfires the first time I start it every day. I checked my distributor cap, and it had trails in it, so I replaced the cap and rotor, but the car still backfires.

After one or two backfires the first time I turn the key, it will start beautifully. I don't get it. Any ideas?

What altitude did you live in before? If it was alot higher than where you are now then you may need to adjust the carb.

My new altitude is within 1000 feet of my old one.

Then I'm not sure why it would be backfiring. Did you put bad gas in it? My car will consistently backfire and run like crap if I put Arco gas in it. Any other kind and it runs fine. Where did you live before? Was the octane rating any higher on gas where you came from?

Maybe the problem is not related to your move and its just coincidence that something happened at the time you moved?

I am running 87 octane CA Exxon gas here, and I used 85 octane up in Alaska (I would get it anywhere with no problems).

I used to have trouble with Arco gas in my *ustang GT here, so I switched to Exxon.

If it is not related to the move, what would cause backfires? The only thing that I could think of is that the heat evaporates some of the gas out of the carb bowl, so the first start attempt pulls mostly fumes rather than air?

I just want to make my car happy again... :cry

I will try that tonight. It hadn't occurred to me that it was sitting for 3 weeks without any stay-bil or anything in it like I normally do...

I didn't make it to the store for the drygas last night, but it was cold last night and it did not backfire this morning.

Then perhaps a bottle of Drygas, a bottle of Techron, and a fillup with 94 would be in order.
