Default 1980 Stock Speaker grills

Anybody have pictures of stock speaker grills on an 80? Car didn't have any when I got it, hasn't been modified in the rear area, and I bought some grills/brackets from Eckler's and they DON'T FIT :mad

I have heard there are a couple of configurations - so if anybody has pictures of theirs I would be very interested in seeing what it is suppose to look like!!!

Mine dont really fit either! I think it has to do with the larger-than-normal speakers the previous owner put back there however. There's only one screw holding them in! They'll get my attention when I get refocused on the interior

I "remember" what they used to look like, but don't have any pictures.

So what has replaced all these rear stock speakers/grills? I can't get the 6x9 into the hole where the speakers belong and don't really want to build custom boxes. Were the original speakers smaller or not so deep ? Anybody remember ?

Man, I had the same problem! I bought 6x9s to put in the vette, as the previous owner had misplaced about half the interior, and they wouldn't fit right. It seems as though the speakers kind of rest in the corners, and the covers attach to the front and kind of seal the whole thing in. I 'creatively' used longer bolts and tweaked brackets to make mine look acceptable. I could never verify this, but i think factory speakers were smaller than 6x9s.

If I remember correctly the original speakers were not as deep (low profile 6x9's). Ecklers does sell a set of Kenwood Rear Low Profile Replacement Speakers...Part# A9988. They are only 80 Watts Max though.

You need shallow magnet speakers.

Such as these...

Tom, if you want to go in on the material, maybe we can make up some of these. http://members.***.net/~mfouchi/vett...s/boxplans.htm
I had been planning on doing them for some time. We can make 4 just as easy as 2.

For those that mounted the amp to the back wall, did you mount it to the existing back wall, or did you put up another piece of material?

What is on the other side of that back wall, and can you put bolts through there. I thought that was the gas tank back there.

I put a 1/4" particle board behind with a few little 3/4 spacer blocks. (Under the carpet that is). As for what is behind there. It is basically the gas tank. I crawled under and checked clearence. I think you would need about a 2" to 2 1/2" screw that just goes through the back (nothing between the head the back wall) before you actually hit the tank. Just take a look to make sure. I seam to remember using 1 1/2" - 2" screws to mount my amp.
