Default HURST SHIFTER...GRRRRR!!!!

So I got the Hurst shifter from Summit to use with my m20 4-speed Muncie trans and I find that it doesn't fit in the car correctly.

:nopity

The problem I’m having is when its installed its off horizontally by 1 1/2" and Vertically by 2". Has anyone else had this problem and came up with a good fix?

I'm considering cutting the shifter rod at the base and welding a plate in-line to correct how far off the placement is but I don’t want to start welding and modifying if I don’t have to.

Thanks,
--Curt

I also have a Hurst Shifter in my 69 that rubs the opening in the cosole when going to reverse. Outer shifter boot is torn becuase of it. Not the biggest problem I have, but would be very interested if there's a solution. :lurk:

You guys are not very encouraging about Hurst. I have a new one still sitting in the box ready to go in, but, just have not had the time to do it.

Are you using the striaght lever that came with it or one of the stock looking shift levers? I had to bend the "stock appearing" lever to move it more to the right.

My stock shifter hits the front edge of the opening. there is about an inch of room on the back. The hurst I took out hit and I thought it was the hurst set-up... that't just the way the car is I guess.

What is your part number? I just put one in and it fits perfectly. My shifter stick has a slight bend in it and is 10.5" long.

I will have to check when i get home. Maybe there is a solution other then cutting, welding, and customizing.

You want shifter part # 3917992 and installation kit part # 3738611. You need to use this Hurst kit not a universal kit. My shifter only barely hits when I go into reverse.

I have the exact same problem with my 69 (350 - 350) and a Hurst shifter. The shifter hits the opening and tears the rubber boot when going into reverse. I have been looking for a leather replacement.

I am also curious to know if you have a vibration problem with your shifter. Mine vibrates pretty badly at around 3500 rpm, causing the white plastic **** to vibrate loudly. If I unscrew the **** from the shaft the sound goes away.

Is it the correct white ****? There are universal fit ***** that come with different threaded bushings, maybe you have the wrong one? Maybe it's just a loose jam nut under the ball?

Hey Guys...I have the Hurst too, and have had it on the car for about 7 months. Mine touched the console too when I installed it, but I adjusted the "throw" of the shifter using the adjustments on the shifter rods.....no touching now. It took about a week's worth of tweaking and using the little plastic insert to get it all aligned, but now it works like a dream!! Mine buzzed a little at first, but I clamped a piece of rubber hose at the base of the shifter with a small stainless steel hose clamp, and that did the trick. Looking back at the stock shifter now makes me realize how good the Hurst is.

I had the same problem with the vibration in the **** that comes with the shifter. Spend a few dollars more and get the solid **** with the shift pattern engraved into the top. no plastic = no vibration noise. BTW, my shifter fits and works perfect.

Hmmm. I believe that my **** is original (solid plastic, sorta off white with the shift pattern in the ****). Ths shifter itself must be at least 25 years old since the previous owner said it was in the car when she bought it back in 78. In any event, the vibration/rattle is loud enough that I am considering replacing the ****.

You need to have the correct plate that mounts between trans and shifter box. Hurst made many different ones.
