Adjusting timming, dumb question
I forgot which way to turn the distributor to retard the timming. When you are standing on the passenger side, do you turn clockwise or counter clockwise to retard the timming?

Clockwise. Think of this way, eng rotates the rotor in a clockwise fashion looking down on it, so if you rotate the dist clockwise you are rotating the contact points further ahead so the contact is made later in the piston's upward motion.

This is an area of tweaking where a little goes a long way.If you don't have a timing light you may retard,or advance more than you think, and will most likely be redoing the timing again. :withstupid:

You can always look at it in terms of the vacuum advance, so you won't forget. The vacuum pulls your distributor plate advanced correct? So if you look at how the vacuum advance is mounted on the distributer, it is kinda like a pull cord on a lawnmower yanking it advanced. So opposite of this action would be retarding. Does this make any sense to anyone else?
