Default High Performance Starters for Big Block

Has anyone used Powermaster Gear Reduction starters on a big block car with sidemount headers? My 427 is due back from the engine builder in two weeks and will have 11.25:1 compression. I'm wondering whether the stock starter will hold up or if the new starter is worth it and might have added advantage with header clearance, etc. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Many of us use the Delco permanent magnet gear reduction starter found in late model big-block trucks. I've had mine for a few years now and it has been flawless. You can find some discussions in the archives.

Thanks zwede.

Is this a gear reduction or "stock" sized unit?

It's gear reduction. Very compact and weighs less than 10lbs.

I have the Summit racing which is actually a power master. It's the one that says for 500 ci and 17 to 1 compression motors. It just zings up my 11.2 stroker small block with a 168 tooth flex.

It's much smaller than my previous big block chevy starter

I believe I have the same one that Zwede does. It's an AC Delco mini-gear reduction starter. It weighs in at 8lbs which is a good bit lighter than the 23lb starter that came with my L48 350 motor.

I run this starter on my 454 big block. I have around 28-30 degrees initial timing and even on hot days it turns my motor over with very little trouble. I would highly recommend one.
