Default 700R4 & drive shafts

i am installing the 700R4 in my 79 and am kinda leary about cutting the drive shaft, i am going to get an aftermarket cossmember so that everything will mount up properly. what i was wondering was will an 82 corvette drive shaft fit on my 79 with the 700r4 without modification, because it had this tranny from the factory. or was it just mounted farther back and used the same shaft.

thanks

every car is slightly different....what you do is call your local tranny shop, ask who they use, they usually all us the same one or two driveshaft shops. call the local shop and ask how they prefer for the measurements to be taken, there are 2 or 3 easy but different methods used and all must be used with the weight of the car on the ground or on a lift supporting the rear tires. use the 350 yoke rather than buying one for a 700r4..the th350 one will work perfectly and it is less bulky than the 700r4 one. if you bring the shop you use the old driveshaft, the new measurements, and 2 new u-joints you'll be back in biz after about 80 bucks and and hour or so. who's tranny mount and tv cable setup are you going to use? :chevy

i used the tv setup they had with the last conversion i did in a 76 for a customer of mine, i would highly recomend it. have you bought or had a tranny built yet.....i have had very good luck with theirs and the install went perfectly and if you buy their entire setup you'll be happy, their installers kit includes everything you would need to put the 700r4 and setup it up in your vette.

When I did mine I called BowTie for a length and they said they install the trans, then measure for the cut. It seems the Vette has a unique length tail section on the 700r4,and the transmissions they sell are not Vette transmissions. The machinist that cut mine told me to stick the TH350 yoke in the transmission without the driveshaft, and push it all the way into the tail housing. Then pull it out 3/4" and measure the distance from the center of the yoke bearing caps to the center of the differential flanges bearing caps.

Mine was 25 1/2" center to center and the fit is perfect.

82 will not work. I used a 88 alum. driveshaft and had it cut. Also, why buy a crossmember. Just cut and weld the old one. See pic below.

I bought a used drivesghaft at the junkyard for $35, then had a machine shop doi the cutting for me. I used Bowtie OD for the crossmember.. Tv system, etc.. Good People. You will love the set-up.. If you get the tranny, be sure and get it built for hi perf.. i.e. vette servo, rebuild, shift kit, etc.. They are great
