Re: red, yellow, or blue optima? (1slow78)
I have the Yellow Top in my 69 because my electric fans run for 15 minutes or so after I turn the engine off.
I just figured a deep cycle would be better for this application.

Or you can get a black Champion constructed just like the Optima battery for about $50 LESS! I found them at Sam's Club the other day. The even look the same except it says chapion on it and the top of the case is squared off, but they use the same gel core technology.

442olds,
how much were they at sam's? autozone wants 109 for the red top. the red top come with 3 year free replacement. the yellow top only has a one year. my fans do run after i turn off the car but i am going to change that. that is part of the reason why i need a new battery. looks like most people are going with the yellow but i think i am going to go with the red for the 3 years vs. the one year.
thanks everybody,
Mike

The champion I bought I think was in the 80 dollar range and that was the lower cca battery. They had another that was a little larger and a lot heavier (my deciding factor was the weight) for like $98, it also had the three year warrantee. The red optimas I have seen were much more than 109 around here so that's why I went with the champion battery. Even the smaller one has plenty of go juice to spin over a 11.25:1 pump gas 433 bbc with a CVR Gear reduction starter and no alternator hooked up. Haven't gotten to the accessory drive yet and it looks like it will be a little longer as my crank pulley is on back order at summit. For now I just hook up the battery charger. But I have cranked on it a lot without the battery charger hooked up as well and all seems good so far.

Looked at those myself. No compelling reason to buy one. Bought a Champion battery at Sam's Club for about 60 bucks less. The difference in cost would buy the CRAP team a lot of beers at Hills 'n Dales (on July 29).

The Champion batts are a gell cell. We tried a version of the gell cell on the railroad. and they failed every-time.
The Optima are a true dry cell.
The railroad went back to a nickel cadmium wet cell. we have been using them for over 50 years now to run our signal system. Most of them last 25 to 30 years. multiple lightening hits usually frys them by then.
