Default How to test backup light switch?

When I put my 69 4speed into reverse the motor dies as if key was turned off. I disconnected the backup light switch at firewall and motor will keep running when I put into reverse.
The switch is about 60 bucks so I don't just want to buy one if I dont need one.Anyone know how to test one or have any ideas why disconnecting switch allows car to not to die when I put shifter into reverse. Thanks

:skep:

that does not sound good

Will the motor keep running if you short power (i.e. bypass the switch) to the backup lights?

I think one wire is live, so when switch is moved by linkage the connection is completed and back up lights turn on. If car dies when this happens I would think your shorting out something bad on the wire that is not "live". My .02
