what rear ends were available in 80?
i have no clue what my rear end ratio is and glutamine and I have gotten into screaming matches and fist fights (jk) about what was available. Can't seem to find it in books. Maybe I'll jack it up and count revs.

Not to my knowledge. Also if you put 3:73 in (which is the biggest you can go to in an aluminum rear 80-82) you will 9 of 10 times get a howl from the gears

Before 1980, a lot of ratios were available.
3.07 was the only gear available in 1980.
In 1981(I'm less sure about that one), the manual came with 2.72 and the automatic(350THC) came with 3.07.
Finally in 1982, they all came automatic(700r4) with 2.72.

I had 3.08's, currently have 3.73's but would prefer 3.55's or 3.4x size.
Van Steel - if I send you my old carrier with the 3.08 gear in it, how much to change the gear to a 3.4x or 3.55, rebuild the clutch pack and put new seals in it ?
The stub axles in that case are shot. The new case with the 3.73's that I installed had the manual transmission stub axles in it. I will keep those and slide them into the rebuilt gear case I get from you.

Yes, a howl from the rear end not the driveshaft. I've talked to a lot of people that have had this problem w/the 3:73 gear.

I can rebuild you unit for $545 and new gears for $255. That comes w/Timken seals and Spicer bearing, Eaton clutch pack, fluid and aditive, gasket, the gears will be from Tom's Differentials. I'm not wooried about the side yokes being shot if your not going to reuse them. And i'll give you 5% off or free shipping.

Re: what rear ends were available in 80? (Van Steel)
Van Steel: Thanks for the 'heads-up' regarding 3.73/howl. Is this with ALL 3.73s, or just certain manufacturers?
According to a book I have, "Standard Catalog of CHEVROLET 1912-1990" (quality of info un-known), available ratios for 1980: 3.07 w/ 4spd; 3.55 w/auto. 1981 ratio avalibilty: 2.72 w/4spd; 2.87 w/auto, and for '82's: 2.72 is standard, EXCEPT for cars with aluminum wheels, which got 2.87s. These facts just don't sound right to me, but I've heard people SWEAR that these numbers are true. In related news; I heard that 'ZIP' products make 4.10/4.33/4.56 gears that 'fit' our series-3 carriers (my Cross-Fire needs all the help it can get!), but I can't confirm this. Anybody else heard this?

Glensgages-
Thats a good question. I'm really not sure. Next time someone calls me w/a concern about it I will find out who they used.
