Default I let the smoke out of the wires. :(

I am in the process of cleaning up all of the wiring from my TPI and vintage air install while I wait for the second electric fan and throttle cable.

I connected all of the grounds to the engine block and then tested it by connecting the battery and turning the key on for a second.

A whole bunch of smoke leaked out of the wires. Apparently bubba strikes again. While black wires in general are always ground... apparently one of the former owners felt the need to replace one of the key on power wires (to the wiper motor) with a black one. :mad

No serious harm done. I replaced that wire with a new heavier gauge wire and of course removed it from the ground.

What a pain.

I'm glad you were able to get it fixed easily enough. I always use black wire for grounds on automotive systems, in residential wiring green is ground, white is common. That's the rules for wire colors I have. :yesnod:

Oh, that just bites. I guess it was lucky that you were paying attention to what was going on. Could have been a lot worse. At least it was only one wire that the smoke leaked out of.

My favorite is trying to start the engine the first time after a swap or R/R and smoking the Water temp line, or oil pressure line or coil ground or whatever because nobody put a ground strap back on the block.  Seen it happen 3 times now (not to me yet, I was an innocent drinkstander)

It doesn't work when you let the smoke out.

Many years ago an instructor told me about the "Magic Smoke Principle".

He said everything electrical, TV's. computers, switches etc all contain "Magic Smoke". The secret key is to keep all the Magic Smoke INSIDE...if you let it out things don't work anymore!!

Good save!

it really sucks when basic color coding is not followed. There is a company called baja designs that make street legal kits for dirt bikes. ground is red, power is blue, I mean its awful and they are by far the largest maker of these kits.

I have a tech here that specializes in making 'magic smoke'! The others haven't figured out what his secret is yet, thankfully.

Is that a British Company? It's not uncommon to see positive ground on some of the older British stuff, thought maybe they got away from that though. My Triumph Daytona motorcycle had positive ground.
