Broken Z bar (clutch cross shaft)--replace or fix?
This weekend I discovered that my z bar (clutch cross shaft) is broken. The only replacement I have been able to find is at Ecklers for about $115. Do you know if there is any other alternatives to replace this? What about having the z bar welded?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I would have it welded. If you grind a taper and fill it with weld it can be as strong as new. You could grind the weld flat and no one would know it was repaired. Good Luck, Craig :seeya

Now listen carefully and watch the swinging watch... What you want is a Turbo 400... what you NEED is a Turbo 400... what you need is MY Turbo 400... send me your muncie, I'll send you my Turbo 400... No, you don't have to thank me... ;)
Just kidding... I'm just jealous that you have a manual tranny and I don't. But just wait, it's high on the list (and I do have an M20 in the garage now).
Anybody know if a Hurst Shifter out of a 70 El Camino will work in the Vette?

It really shouldn't cost much to have it welded. That's what I would do.
BB73, the shifter will work but the rods and mounting bracket are probably wrong for a Corvette. You can buy all of that from Hurst so it shouldn't be a big deal to get the parts.

Any idea what caused it? If your linkage is anything like mine it is worn pretty well at all pivot points. I used a thin washer at a few points to move the connecting point over a little so it rides on a non worn part of the shafts.

Mine broke right after I installed a heavier clutch. If you ask me, the factory weld looks kind of poor. Being 30 years old didn't help either.
I took mine to a local shop to get welded. Later, when I stoped back in to pick it up, the welder added gussets (triangular pieces) on both inside corners.
Now, it's better than stock.
