Default (OT) My neighbor's roadtrip goes bad in CLEVELAND

My next door neighbor's son just graduated from HS. He drives a 73 Caprice (400 ci smallblock). I was a little skeptical when they bought the car, because they don't work on cars at all, but it was pretty good for him during his senior year. He set off on a cross country roadtrip a couple of days ago with 2 of his friends, as he is going to college in California.......

His mom just called me. Car overheated and they might have cracked the block (How the heck did they let it get that hot?????) in Cleveland. The boys are all 18 - so his dad (my neighbor) flew out to Cleveland to save their butts. He will probably buy them a car so they can finish their excellent adventure. The 73 Caprice will be laid up for a couple of weeks. Not sure if engine can be rebuilt or what... MJ

Something aways seems to happen on those cross country trips!
For me:
First time- thown in jail in Idaho (long story)
Second time- bent valve in '66 Impala SS 396 4 spd- towed to hotel- repaired in parking lot- in Montana
Now I fly :smash:

Dave

lyndave75 Hell, I don't know about that. I went cross-county (9,000 mile trip) on a street bike with no problems about 10 years ago. Last year, by brother, his gf and I went 3,000 miles on dual sport bikes with no major problems. And that was on dirt roads for just about the entire trip. We carried what tools we could. I guess it is a matter of planning.

I was thinking you were going to tell us that you were going to have to go rescue them.

When you are 18 yrs. old you are not worring about anything.

When I was 18 I had to spend 3 days in Panama City Beach while the car
was in the garage for repairs. I had no choice but to spend the days on the beach looking at bikinis and the nights at the local nightclub 'The Hangout'

I guess some people have better luck.
As for planning, on the first trip I didn't "plan" on drinking that much and getting thrown in jail.
Second trip at least I had a full set of tools with me. Pulled both heads, replaced bent valve, replaced stock rocker arms(cause of problem due to .580 lift cam) with roller tips, and while I was in there replaced the headers as one had burnt a hole in it due to muffler guy running pipe through collector and into end of header!!! :mad
All repairs done myself in motel parking lot.
This was the "maiden voyage " for this car as I maybe put 50 miles on it before leaving. Was back on the road in 48 hrs and no trouble after that.
