How much initial advance are you running? Too much will cause "kick back", which is when the early ignition results in too much resistance to the upward movement of the piston and actually tries to force it back down.

Do you still have all the sheet metal heat guards around your starter? I'm just pissin in the wind, but it could be the notorious Chevy hot start problem...

Rick,
That would have nothing to do with 100,000+ miles on the engine as if anything you have probably lost some compression. We've all run across this with our cars over time. I would look at the starter or the timing as was suggested above.

Retard the timing just a little... like mentioned before, it's igniting early and the starter has to push it through kindof a backwards power stroke. It's not a problem with the starter... at least this is what I think.

I agree that it may be too much intial timing. I had a non-Vette that was hard to turn over when it was warm. When I checked the timing, I found it was WAY TOO MUCH. After reducing it back to factory specs, I don't have that problem anymore.

Mine did the same thing. Turns out it was heat soak in the starter. Had the starter rebuilt and it turns over fine now when when warm. :chevy

Mine only does it on very short trips. If I drive 10 miles or less, stop to get gas, it will do that when I try to restart. However, I could drive all day and be out of it a few minutes and it starts right up. I always let it warm up before driving anywhere so it's long since been at operating temp, even on the short trip.

If you do a forum search you will find that a lot of people say that the dreaded heat soak problem is a myth, usually the problem is caused by some other factor like dirty electrical connections.

OK, OK...heat soak in the solenoid! I fixed mine with a new solenoid and a shorter spring.
But in Rick's case, I vote for timing :yesnod:

My years of experience say it is your starter. Heat soak. When its hot it doesn't want to work. When it is cold it is fine.
There is a started heat shield you can buy or just replace the started with a good heavy duty one. I bet your problem will be resolved.

Heat soak is not a myth. It is a reality. I have experienced it in many C3's. I have confronted the problem and solved it on at least 8 different Corvettes.
There are a lot of Corvette myths, like the law of the 4's and the curse of the 68, but this is not one of them.
