Default Need a Little Help, Looking at Early Sharks as a Replacement

My C5 vert was totaled 5 weeks ago and one of the possabilities I've been considering as a replacement is a 68-71 Chrome Bumper Shark :)

I of course like green but don't know anything about the colors offered back then....can anyone lend a hand

And any general insight into buying would be greatly appreciated....here's one I just found :D

MG2K, maybe we can go offline for a long discussion best done over emails...

as allways, it depends on what you want, and what you want out of the car....

I'd keep looking.. Not that it's not a nice car but $27K it's not.. Not to me anyway. I think you would be able to find a decent 427 convertible for at or less money.. Just don't ask me where.. :D

That would be about the price for a frame off restoration car, original is nice, but I would not want to be relying on 30+ year old original parts. I don't know if you have owned a shark before, but I would suggest you get some seat time in one before you commit. After your c-5, that shark is not going to compare in ride and comfort.

It's a nice car, but definitely not worth 27k. For that kind of money you could buy a BB vert in very good to excellent condition.

As far as the color, green was available in every year 1968-72, each with a different name, some better looking greens than others.

Sorry to hear bout the totalled C5...hope no one was hurt.....

Whatever you do, don't get in a hurry when buying one. I looked for about 6 mos. before I found what I wanted (matter of fact, I got it in Tampa). Some looked even longer. This is the right place to look for info. These guys are awesome!!

Don't rule out '72's or even '73's for that matter ('73's still had the chrome REAR bumper). The SAE ratings just don't exagerate the horsepower numbers like the pre-'72 gross ratings did. The engines were essentially the same for '71 to '72. '68's have a lot of hard to find unique interior and body parts but I wouldn't pass up a nice (and complete) one. Big blocks are cool but I wouldn't want to drive one every day. The stock small blocks from that era won't touch a C5 performance-wise or ride-wise, but you'll sure get high marks looks-wise.

Buy one that's nicely restored. If you just had a C5, you don't want to drive around a worn-out C3 because you'll be fixing it all the time. C3's are much more crude than C5's (or many of the new cars for that matter) but the styling of them is second to none.

Also, pre-'71 corvettes all required high octane leaded fuel. If the motor was rebuilt with hardened valve seats you'd be OK with unleaded fuel but you'll still need to buy premium.

Like the others said, don't jump in and buy right away. Look around, see what's available and for how much, then buy.

Great info everyone and thanks :)....I haven't made up my mind about anything and I won't make a decision too quickly, but all the info is awesome

As for usage, it'd be a weekend car, need to make a trip to BG once a year and drag racing 2-3 times a month :D

That's a nice car. It has all the right options (tilt-tele is nice to have & AC)
Offer him 18,000 & see what he says.
I would rather buy a clean small block than a beater big block. You can always drop in a 502 if you feel the need.

Hey Mark,

Sorry to hear that. Hemmings Motor News is another good resource to look in.... Here's a preset search for 68-72

http://www.hemmings.com/hemmings/sea...el=&startrow=1

And having experience, not sure whether I should have left the 68 in there ;)

But hey, the highest dollar sale of a C3 went to a 68... so they must have something going for em :D

Ahh heres a green beauty for you..

I love the sharks. Most important thing is to find one that hasnt been all @#$%^& up by someone that doesnt know what they are doing. Find one as original as possible then you can do what you want with it and do it right. A messed up c3 will give you a life time membership to the phsyc ward. Good luck with your looking hope you find what you want. I waited until I was 32 till I got my first shark. It killed me but the wait was worth it. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Gazootime@yahoo.com

Am currently doing a '71. Rather than following NCRS rules, I'm going with the updated suspension, steeroids, etc. It will look original, but, the handling will be FAR improved.
