Creeking noise in rear end
Is it common on a 1978 to hear a creeking noise when hitting the gas from a dead stop? I sounds like the rear springs are making the noise.

Re: Creeking noise in rear end (ugman)
First guess would be the the positraction clutches chattering. Add a bottle or two of the oil additive that GM recommends, do a few figure 8's in a parking lot and it should go away.

It could be the differential as MikeC said (and if it hasn't been done in a while; a fluid change is always a good idea), but it could also be:
e-brakes
leaf spring
shocks
u-joints
rallye wheel trim rings
Do you hear it only on "take-off"?

Hey ugman, reply to jerryp58's question. I've got a 78 and have the same noise sometimes, though mine comes off as sort of a creaking 'thud'.

Re: Creeking noise in rear end (five-boy-mom)
Creaking thud sounds like worn front differential mount or u-joints. I currently have an unidentified noise from the rear so I'm pulling the rear end out and pretty much replacing anything that moves. It's like nuking the site from orbit: only way to be sure.

If it is your rear spring you should be able to hear the squeak when you bounce the rear end. I've sprayed my spring with lube and the squeak goes away, but it doesn't last long.

Yep, I agree with the posts that its the clutch discs in the diff. It is worse if you do a turn as u move off from a dead stop. :steering:
