In '72 which engine was rated at 360 ft/lbs?
There's a 1972 Coupe for sale here, asking $12,500. It appears to have the LT1 hood. The data plate says like 8.5:1 compression and 360 ft/lbs of torque, but no HP rating. The Tach has a yellow line starting at like 5,000 RPMS... It's also an automatic tranny car.
Is this a LT1, or base 350?

That's what I figured. It has a pretty good "overspray special" blue paint job, worn-out weather stripping and huge aftermarket wheels and tires. $12,500 is way, way too much for a base car out here. This car would be more likely to sell at the $7,500 range in WA.

No that would be the 454 8.5:1 270HP LS5, and I thought it was 390ftlbs.?. If the plate says "300 ftlbs" that would be base...

1971 350 was rated 270 Gross HP, 360 gross TQ. Also the LT1 was 360 gross TQ... Maybe they used a 71 plate...

The 71 data plate lists the HP, Torque, CR, and CID.
In 1972 the plate dropped the HP rating, but kept the Torque (360) CR (8.5:1) and the CID (350).
The car you described has the base 350 engine. The LT-1 wasn't available with automatic trans.

The base engine would state the information you listed on that plate. Mine does. Of course, the console could always have been changed! Check out the numbers and don't just rely on the console tag or the hood.

Horsepower and torque ratings during those years were determined by marketing and insurance claims, not by engineering and performance. Rated numbers weren't always at the peak RPM, just whatever made the numbers come out. Joe
