Default Alternator Mounting .... Double Hump Heads

As part of my donor motor buildup, double hump heads are being used. The problem is, my existing L-48 uses accessory holes in the heads to bolt the alternator bracket on, the "new" heads don't have these holes. This will obviously have to be changed. In addition, if possible,I would like to mount the alternator on the passenger side to balance out the appearance under the hood, and to allow me easier access to the power steering pump. Is there any one out there with these heads, or that has done this change that can give me the options, part #'s for what it is I need to purchase?

Thanks.....

Michael

If you put the alternator on the other side, won't it be spinning backwards :skep:

A '68 Corvette smallblock setup the bottom of the alternator bolts to the front of the driver's side exhaust manifold. :yesnod:

Only if he mounts it backwards (facing the windsheild). :) Just think about unhooking the alt but leaving the belt on it then move it to the other side of the eng. Still spins the same way. If you where joking the :skep: guy threw me.

Don`t tell anyone but running the alternator backwards is worth 20hp on the dyno!! ...redvetracr

I've seen that mount, but that won't work with headers. SURELY there is someone out there who has done this (double hump head) upgrade AND installed headers? This combo would result in the need for a custom / aftermarket alt mount, that's the info I need.

Can the heads be tapped with needed holes?

I would only do this as an absolute last resort. If I can't locate the parts required, I'll have them fabbed.

There 'ya go! I've seen them mounted low like the P/S pump, and high over the waterpump, but not on a vette.

Jegs sells a bracket made by Dynomax that will allow you to mount your alternator on the drivers side. It is described as "GM Early Front Bracket" and is their item no. 289-88301. You use the stock '68-'71 brackets and this bracket takes the place of the manifold mount. Here's some pics of the install in my '73.

This won't help you mount on the passenger side but it beats fabricating something.

Try a street rod kit, or a camaro/chevelle mount? Joe
