Strange starting problem - and solution
For the first time in years, I have my car running rather smoothly.
Yesterday, I went out to start it and once it was turned over, the engine would continue to rev until I turned the key off.
It sounded like it was a stuck accelerator cable, but it wasn't, at least it wasn't apparent. I had a look inside the carb, and the butterfly valves on the secondaries were open just a crack. I touched one of them lightly with a screwdriver and they closed, at the same time I noticed that the secondary actuator on the accelerator cable moved just a tiny bit. It was stuck in the open position.
I sprayed some DW-40 on the linkage and hopefully that will be the end of it.
Is this a weird occurence?

Re: Strange starting problem - and solution (Stewart's74)
I have seen on (assume you have a Q-Jet) the secondaries warp slightly and hang open. This was a problem on the old Carter AFB's. If the problem continues you might take the carb off, and work the linkage by hand to see where the bind is. If it is the secondary butterflys take them off and lightly sand them with emery cloth to remove the worn sharp edges. Not too much or you create air leaks.

Re: Strange starting problem - and solution (bigvette1)
That's exactly the carb I have. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on it and if it happens again, I'll add a carb rebuild to the list.
