Still dies when choke is knocked off
As you guys already know I've been trying to get my car running ever since i joined the forum. Well now I have it idling, until i knock it off the choke, then it dies. There is no backfire or nuthin it just dies. The carb i have is a Carter AFB (same as an edelbrock performer). Someone please help me, I need to take the car to a car show in september and don't want to have to tow it there.

Re: Still dies when choke is knocked off (battsup)
Can anybody get me a scan of the latest Car Craft magazine? I need the section of the 20 carb questions answered or something to that effect. It is in the june 2003 edition. Thanks in advance.

A few things to look at, when it's idling with the choke on is it fast idling? Look at the RPM guage to see what RPM it's at when choke is on.
I'm guessing that it's fast idling and then when you take the choke off it idles so low it dies, if so turn your idle screw up so it idles around 750 rpm with the choke off.

Tominator: Yes it is fast idling(1600-1800 RPM) but when i tune it down to 800 RPM and shut her off she wont start.

So if I'm understanding correctly when it idles low it dies, roughly what is the lowest it will idle.
I'm hope some one is going to chime in here with some more ideas.

Well as i said before the car does idle. But it only fast idles, as soon as i press the gas pedal the RPMs drop right away and it dies. I can set the fast idle down to 800 but then it won't start up.

Thanks James. I am going to video tape what is happening and then post it to see if anyone can figure it out after watching the video.

DEFINITELY starving for gas. Can you keep it running by dribbling gas down the carb? You might want to start by setting the mixture to the default starting point. I don't know what that is for your carb, but it should be easy enough to find out. It's going to be close the idle mixture screw all the way, then back it out x number of turns. Are you sure enough gas is getting to the carb in the first place? i.e pump, filter, pinched line, etc.

Re: Still dies when choke is knocked off (Diode)
I'm sure that enough fuel is getting in because the first thing i did was change the fuel line and the fuel filter. After that my dad took the carb apart and made sure that all the jets were clean by using carb cleaner.
here is a link to the video

As you can see when i held the choke valve nearly closed the car continued to run but when i let go it died.

Re: Still dies when choke is knocked off (battsup)
Again, did you actually check the volume of fuel getting to the carb by pumping into a measuring cup? Not usually a problem at idle, but… And you still need to set the idle mixture properly. If it's set way lean, you going to get the starvation problem you have. Was the carb working before your dad took it apart? Everything go back together the right way? Float height set right? Set too low and it will starve. Does this carb have an internal paper or ceramic filter? If you have to choke it to keep it running, not enough fuel is getting down the barrels, period. If you are CERTAIN that everything went together correctly and you are CERTAIN that you don't have a delivery problem, it has to be the idle mixture setting. There is no other explanation.
