Default Floppy Rearview Mirror

Anybody have a good repair for a floppy interior rearview mirror? I have seen posts on the driver side mirror, but not on the interior mirror. My '68 mirror will not stay in any position except down!

Probably that bolt coming loose, try either lock tight or a thread tape. If your mirror/bracket mating surfaces has lost some metal not allowing the bolt to hold it tight you might try to find a thin small nylon washer to tuck descretely in there. Just cranking my bolt tighter helped but I think the washer might work better.

I had good luck with running locktight into the side mirror and letting it set up. I do it about once a year and the mirror stays tight. Don't see why it wouldn't work on the interior mirror as well.

i had the same problem- also had a brand new mirror- by overtighting the screw i broke the arm that the mirror bolts to. so i bought a vinyl spacer at ace hardware-fitted it in (sleeved the bolt) and now it workes great- they should have done this at the factory--carl a

I don't remember exactly what I did (>10 years ago, memory is shot), but I took the mirror down and tightened a few screws around the ball that holds it in position and it tightened right up.

My mirror has been doing this ever since I had the car. Someone before me even has tightened the screw at the mirror so much that they have stripped the head on the phillips screw. I have bought all new stuff including mirror. I am just waiting on the repaint to install new stuff on the interior. I am hoping that this will be my permanent fix.

Thanks guys. I found the looseness was where the stem ball mounts to the windshield frame. I put the mounting bracket in a vise and gave it a little squeeze to flatten it out somewhat. This allows the bracket to grip the stem ball a little tighter. When I put it back together, it seems pretty stiff. I won't know for sure until my next WOT pass, which will be very, very soon! :)

 I posted this question oh, maybe 9 months ago or so, and someone who shall remain nameless said, "JB Weld" Someone else's reply to that was, "It might make it a little hard to adjust!"
I still haven't tackled this problem because, well :( I just don't get to drive my car all that often. I picked her up in March of '02 and I can probably count on my hands and feet the number of times I've driven her. That's changing as this summer rolls on :chevy I'll Be There
