Cars dies going into gear (reverse)
I have an anoying little problem that maybe someone can help me diagnose. My vette dies (stalls) when going from park into reverse. I warm it up good (it has elec. choke) but sometimes when I shift it into reverse it stalls. It did this Friday at my In-Laws driveway, right after I got done telling my father in law how great it was running (maybe that was my first mistake). ANyway, it stalled about 5 times then I had to goose it to get it to run.
It only does it once in a while. I have a new ZZ4 motor (about 3500 miles on it) and a new Demon 650 carb. Once it's running it runs like a champ.
Any ideas?

My car does that when going into rev or drive. I haven't found the trouble yet. Does your car die when going into drive any? I tried adjusting the choke (I switched to electric) It doesn't seem to matter if I lean or enrich the adjustment the car still needs three to four minutes to warm up even on 90 deg. days  You may try adjusting the choke, maybe that will work for you. Is your idle set correct?

Thanks. I'm pretty sure the idle is set correct, although I don't have a functional tach at the moment. It has stalled going into drive one or twice but reverse seems to be more common.
Mine needs about the same amount of time to warm up even here in FL in the summer!

I wonder if your nuetral safety switch is pooping out? The car is already running, so I wouldn't think it would be an issue. Can it ground out the ignition?

i've had no choke 14 years in FL.
they are more trouble than they are worth.
with a choke it might be too rich or too lean.
without it, it can only be too lean. that's easy enough to fix with the gas pedal.
sometimes it stalls when i get out to close the garage door. but not when i am in the car.

Maybe there's some sort of weird vacuum issue considering you have to goose it to keep it going. I'm no expert here . . . just tossing out ideas. Goodluck. :chevy
EDIT - I have an electric choke and I've noticed more problems when working without it. But that could just be due to my geographic location.

Re: Cars dies going into gear (Matt Gruber)
Matt, I've wanted to lose the choke ever since I put the carb on! I hate it but I thought I could figure it out. I don't know about a neutral safety switch, I'll have to check my Hayes manual and see what that is. As far as the vaccum leak, wouldn't I notice other things if that were the case? Although I usually don't rule anything out with this car...it's old and fickle.
Thanks a ton for the replies!

Just for the heck of it you might check your base timing, might not be high enough to keep it running when a load is placed on it. If you balancer slipped then your reading might be off.

I had the same problem, added some trans fluid, and it works fine now, try that, or your torque converter could be going bad or internal trans problem
