OT 1996 Blazer won't shift out of park?????????
 Hope someone knows the answer? :mad Went to move the Blazer, started right up, but the car won't shift from park. Made sure I stepped on the brake, still nothing.
The worst part of the whole thing is that it's blocking Vette in and I can't get it out!!! :banghead:

My guess, got something to do with the linkage going from column or brake to tranny.

Check the brake light switch. The wire may be broken or the switch itself may be bad. If you need to move the car right away, just turn the key to unlock the steering column. Then you can shift to neutral before turning the key to the on position. Start the car and place the lever in drive or reverse. You'll be able to drive normaly as long as you don't go back to park. Hope this works for you. Good luck.

Have the neighbor with a big truck hook a chain to it and drag it out of the way so you can drive the Corvette

To determine if it is in the transmission or the column linkage, disconnect the shifter cable/rod at the transmission. Then try to move the lever on the transmission to verify if it will move through the detents/gear selections. Be sure to have the wheels blocked securely to prevent the car from rolling over you as you pull it out of Park. If it does move out of park then you know it is further up the linkage. Probobly a brake safety lockout issue or a malfunction in the column linkage.

My 97 Burb does this all the time. On mine it is the safety interlock thingy that won't let you start the vehicle w/o stepping on the brake. I turn the key not quite to the on position and shift into neutral, then I can start it. Last I checked the parts store wanted $100 for a new switch.

Some times parking on a hill and having the weight of the vehicle resting on the parking pawl will cause this. If that's the case you may have to get someone to work the lever while you get a couple of buddies to help push the vehicle the opposite direction of the hill you are on.

Thanks for all the help. It seems to be the safety switch. I only hope that I can find it for less than $100.00. :steering: :grouphug:
