Indy Year 25

Took my 68 down town today to take some pictures. Took off from a stop light (like a normal person fortunately) pushed in the clutch to shift to second. heard something break, and the clutch pedal stayed on the floor.

Pulled over and found the push rod between the pedal and the cross shaft broken. It broke in the threaded portion about an inch from the swivel. About 5 miles from home, no tools, no cell. I was able to straighten out the cotter pins and get the two parts off.

Fortunately I was only about a half mile from an Auto Zone. Walked over there with the two pieces of the push rod. Walked past the factory I work at, thought if anyone was there in maintenance I might be able to get them to weld it together to get me home. No one there :( .

Auto Zone wasn't much help, but I was able to buy two nuts (surprised to find the threads were metric). The threads on the rod were in good shape, so I was able to screw both pieces into one nut and use the other as a jamb nut. Walked back to the car and put the rod back on, and off I went.

The clutch actually works better now than it has since I had the car. I felt confident enough in my repair that I went down town and took the pictures (see sig) then went to the library. Nice to have enough Bubba in ya to be able to make a temp repair ad get back on the road. I'll be visiting the General tomorrow
