Default Spare tire carrier as a trunk?

Was just thinking of how little room there is in my vert for luggage and thought a decent sized suitcase could fit in the spare tire carrier. Would use an old one that sealed well and also wrap my clothes in bags but seems it would free up room for important things like a subwoofer. :jester

Just yesterday, I was thinking about getting rid of the spare. If I ever have a flat; have roadside assistance on my insurance policy. :)

FYI

GM designed the spare to be an integral part of the structure in the event of a rear end collision. I wish I could remember where I read that. Might have been in the owners manual. With the gas tank right above it, it makes sense to have that extra mass between the rear bumper and differential housing.

I have a heavy duty garment bag that when folded fits perfectly in the spare tire carrier. When I drove cross country last summer, I had 8 uniforms in the bag in the carrier. Worked great, out of sight and I used the spare tire lock as well. Diameter of the carrier is just about 27" and a soft bag lets you squeeze it up in there. :smash:
