What size garage is necessary to work on a vette?
So I'm doing the whole home buying thing and I can't decide if I want to get a house with a 20x20 garage or get a house with a big enough yard to build a 3 car ($$$). If you have one of these "2 car" garages, what do you think of it? Is there enough room? Any suggestions?

I am managing with 1/2 of my 2 car, since I built an office on the other side.

a 3 car garage works great. One for your car, one for the pcs. and one to do the work in. Then when you are done you can buy another and have a spot for it.

Bigger is always better, but I built my car in a 2 car (20'x22') garage. My wife and I added an addition onto our house a couple years ago and maxed out the usable lot space (city zoning rules) so I can't build a bigger garage. I've basically turned it into a 1 1/2 car garage with all the cabinets and equipment I've got in there, but it's functional.
It's cheaper to get the bigger garage when you buy the house, rather than building a new one. Depending on your priorities, I'd keep that in mind. Unless you fall in love with a specific house, there's always more on the market and it'n not a bad idea to hold out until you find exactly what you want. Obviously buying a house is a big commitment so you owe it to yourself to get what you want and need. Good luck!

has there ever been a problem with too much space???

There are those that say size doesn't matter, well it does in a garage. Get the biggest one you can. I think they are pushing it when they call a typical two car garage a two car garage.
I have a three car that my wife broke down and cleaned out a space for her car. Then I got the 78, and she ended up back outside. Then I got the 68, and the 78 ended up out till I sell it.

A 20x20 garage is about large enough to park two VW's in, and get in and out of them...IF you are shorter....tall people hate small garages, especially if they are older/not limber, or hurting.....my so called 2 car agarage is really a one car....in fact....
a one car garage has 17' between work benches on either side....and the benches are 3' and 2' deep....nuff said....

I have a 26X38 garage for working on the vette in and it's almost too small.

  Look at my sig. One frame off done (if there is such a thing), one in progress, one frame on in progress, one pretty nice 80' (wife's) that needs minor TLC here and there. Plus too much junk. Shop press, welders, cherry picker, engine stands, a couple of smallblock rebuilds always in the works, and occasionally a daily driver repair, but I try to avoid those, because working on a daily driver isn't fun like working on corvettes. A lot of my junk is stored in another room attached onto the shop that is 10 foot wide and as long as the shop, so that helps with cr@p storage.

I have to agree withyou GENE, I have a 20'x20' garage (measured on the outside) by the time I get my tool boxes lined up and the bench I'm down to around 17' so much for a two car garage. I built my car trailer in my garage 12 years ago and it fit untill I finished the hitch area (14' beaver tail)

Re: What size garage is necessary to work on a vette? (nitrocharger)
I had no garage when I bought my vette. And, since it was winter I could not even work on my vette due to the continuous rain (Washington State). Thus, I built the garage first. Given the pre-cut size of lumber I built it to be 8 x 12 x 16 (Height x Width x Depth) as you can see here:
Well, the first one is just a model. :jester
I admit that there wasn't much room to move around, but I did manage to rebuild the tranny, replaced a motor mount and fan shroud (pulled hood to do that), and I think just about every job could be done there all be it in cramped quarters. If I need to build another one I will make it (10 x 16 x 24) which would be plenty of room even for spare parts and tool cabinets.

Depends on how far you want to take your car. Frame off and you might want a Barn.

Well my old garage up north was a 3 car, individual door....and as such the 3rd bay was heated and converted to a Lionel electric train room for/with the kids....
the second bay was compressor, and just plain parking
the third bay was like above about 17' from bench to bench, and about 26 feet long,....only thing I did NOT like was the locals limited the height, just ONE more foot on that ceiling, even for just that section would have been wonderful...but that means another panel on the garage door, for height...
can't win...NOTHING like having buddies in the gas station business, and have all the privilages of friendship, and so forth...keep the tools there and all....
MAN, I miss that arrangement....used it on many an occation...

Well I'm either going to buy a new house in a housing development with a 20x20 or buy an old ranch on 3 acres and build a 2.5 or 3 car.

Ive never actually had the luxury of working in a gargae. I just use that small flat spot on the gravel driveway. My dad hates it when i use the flat spot cause then he cant get to his parking spot so i can only work on the car when he is out for a long time, or not leaving ofr a long time. Now lets get into lifting the entire car on gravel.\

I have an over size 2 car @ 22x24 with a 9ft ceiling and it's too small. My Vette is on one side and I can barely squeeze out the door. Then other side is occupied by my 2 engines, lots of parts, a hood, roll-away tool chests(4), engine hoist, engine stand, christmas decorations, bicycles, two lawn mowers and the hard top for my wife's Jeep. :cry

I think the moral is the bigger the better. I have two garages, an oversized two car, and an integral one car for the vette. I'm thinking of building a detached 2 1/2, getting a C5 yellow vert and then a yellow H.D. for inbetween the two vetttes!
