I dont know when recovery tanks became standard, but I do know that in 68 the overflow hose routes directly to the pavement.... whether that is your driveway or your garage floor! This created many unpleasant incidents for me. My mechanic recommended installing a recovery tank, and it turned out what I thought was an overheating problem was merely normal expansion of the cooling system. I would get one or 2 pints in the recovery tank, and it would get sucked back into the radiator when cool. I have since made additional improvements and the recovery tank rarely sees any coolant, but I am glad the tank is there. :)

Any pics of your recovery tank? I can't keep my system full because it all drains on the floor also.

See the other thread (I see you found it! ) - Markus posted a pic of his installation and I did mine also. You really should not have an overflow hose going straight to the street. Even if your car runs cool and almost never overheats you should still have a recovery tank for that one time that it does overheat. On the other hand, if you get several quarts of overflow, and the recovery tank spills over, you may have problems with your cooling system. MJ

My '76 has an OEM recovery system but it is NOT a closed system like in the modern sense. There is a cap on the bottle, two hoses coming out of it. One drains pressure against the inside of the fender and the other goes to the radiator. It always looks ugly because the coolant blows out the secondary hose (even when I have the bottle just half full) and also, the area around the cap on the recovery bottle is always discolored because it is a press-on cap, not a tight fit screw-on style. So when I get on it, coolant sprays ... and yea I've tried three different radiator caps! :smash: :mad

So anyway, yea I have a recovery bottle. But in hot weather I wish I didn't! :boxing

When I put the stroker in the car, I replaced the OEM bottle and cap too because they were so discusting looking. Now, six months later the replacement one looks about as bad on the outside as the old one did.

(At least it's not brown on the inside like the old one was! :blueangel: )

Bubba installed an aftermarket one in my car that wasn't even hooked up! I thought id connected on the bottom.
I beleive a lack of this connection lead to air lock problems. I think air was getting sucked in as it cooled. I replaced it with a new tank and had no more problems. :D

i my 72 i shoved a 1 qt. tank between the radiator and the right A frame.
the tank is a Catrol oil container, minus the oil, with a hole drilled in the cap to put the hose thru.
