I just bought my first corvette, a '78 pacecar edition.
Will it lose value if I put a diffrent carb, free flowing exhaust and maybe a more agressive cam?

That depends on who you ask. I prefer the aftermarket parts and it would be worth more to me with them, but some people want an all original. The question is... would it be worth more to you with those parts.

Hi and warm welcome. To answer your question I'd say it will affect the value, IF your car is otherwise bonestock #s matching. However I can't see why you can't put little performance under the hood and keep the original stuff if you ever consider selling the car. Just my 0.02 euros :steering:

Nope....Not as long as you keep the stuff you take off. That wasy you can put it back on if you want to sell it "As Original"

Thanks for the welcome... I plan on doing a complete rebuild and figure I might as well add at least a little performance while I am at it. I have never worked on a vette before and figured this would be a good opportunity to learn :flag

I agree with the save the parts theory.

You can search the archive for "matching numbers" threads, but basically, while MANY numbers count, the engine block and the trans are the two big numbers matching items because they use a part of the car's VIN in their number. So it they're removed & sold, they may never be found again. Of course, they can always be forged :rolleyes: . The carb, fuel pump, water pump, etc. all have specific numbers for your year, but finding those parts with the "correct" number is less difficult since it's not tied to the VIN.

Make whatever changes you want, but don't do anything that can't be put back to stock and save all original parts. :thumbs:

Welcome I always go for the better parts and save the original. I also beleive in driving the and having fun thats what I have the car for. :flag

78's aren't really valued by the collector crowd. I'd think that most people in the market to buy one would prefer the improved performance. That doesn't mean that whatever money you put into the car can be tacked onto the selling price in the end though.

This is true for the most part, however of the various 78's out there the Pace Car is by far the most desireable/valuable as far as collectors go. Obviously it becomes even more so if its a L-82 4 speed car.

For me on the other hand I subscribe to the make it a car you like and to hell with the next owner. I dont give a wet slap about the next owner, I wouldnt be having any fun if I was worried about what the he wants in a car.

Since you do have the parts there is certainly no harm in keeping them on the off chance that the next buyer would want an all original car. but frankly you would be much happier I bet if you built it up a bit.

If your car is an L-48 auto - this is almost madatory as they are far more sedentary than you might like. :lol:
