Default 69 BB Carburetor Heat Shield/Gasket?

I remember that a long long long time ago there was a thread that mentioned some problem with BBs running awfully if they are missing a particular heat shield/Gasket. Made out of stainless if I remember properly. How can I tell if I need it? And if I need it- where do I get it? I think Lars gave very good advice there- as always :D
No matter how hard I used the search feature on the forum, I can't find it any more. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Stefan

I have tried it with and without the heat shield and could not tell the difference. I have it on just because the manual says it needs to be there.

That was my thread some time ago. I still have the 3-piece gasket & shield pack available - the complete, correct setup. Drop me an e-mail for detailed info:

The shield is to keep the fuel from getting to hot a vaporizing. I have the sheild on my car I figure it might help but cant hurt.

No, the shield is actually there to heat the carb - not to shield it from the heat. The stainless shield is in direct contact with the hot exhaust gas crossover in the manifold. The exhaust gas heats the shield, and the shield prevents the exaust from entering the carb & intake manifold while heating up the carb. The hot shield provides carb pre-heat by putting heat into the bottom surface of the carb. This pre-heat assists in making the car less balky during cold weather and cold-start situations. Failure to use the shield results in exhaust gasses being pumped into the bottom side of the carb, and the exhaust will dump right into the intake manifold.

If you actually want to shield the carb completely from this heat, you need to drill and tap the exhaust supply holes on either side of the heat slot in the manifold and install pipe plugs in the holes. If you block the exhaust like this, and then run the shield, the shield will actually work to help prevent heat getting into the carb. But a working system is intended to actually heat the carb - not shield it.

so you do not have to drill and tap the manifold just get 2 cup type steel expansion plugs of the proper size at your auto parts and drive them into the 2 holes in the intake. :chevy

That's what I used too. After I did that I found out that when the air temperature is around 37-40 deg F and it is humid and I drive a few blocks, the carburetor will get ice on the throttle plates causing it not to idle.

That's the ticket. Guess what I did a REAL bubba :_dupe:job 3 years ago. Couldn't even remember it. But I put the steel plate on the manifold without a gasket- probably because I didn't have one. And I was wondering why my car didn't run right :smash:
SInce I will not be driving in bad weather, I will try the expander plug solution. Thanks guys!

Stefan
