My rear end is making odd "popping" sounds...
And no, it's not gas...
:nono:
Seriously, though... When I take a sharp turn and get on the gas a bit, I notice a clankish sound coming from the rear end. It only does it when I take a turn, and I've never noticed it when I'm on the straight aways.
Any ideas as to what this may be?

Mine does this a little, it is the axel shafts slipping in and out of the diff.
I know there is a fix for it, but since I haven't done it yet, I haven't done any research....
I'm sure someone will chime in here for you. :seeya

Mine made a similar sound on hard right and left hand turns. I swapped U joints (all 6) and the sounds went away.

If you haven't done it already, a fresh fluid change (with posi-additive) is a good place to start.
If that doesn't do it, I'd hope for the U-joints versus a probelm in the diff itself.
Good Luck.

When I changed the fluid in my diff I didn't add the positraction additive and it did the same thing that your diff is doing. I drained a little of the lube out and put the posi additive in and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks everyone, I'm a newbie to DIY auto mechanics and haven't even considered changing the differential fluid.
I really appreciate all of your help and I'll let you know if it does the trick or not!

You can search the archives, but in case you're not aware of the differential set-up; unless someone has installed an aftermarket differential drain plug, you have to pump the old fluid out through the fill hole before you can add the new fluid & posi additive.

I had a problem with the rear end in my 68 making noise and it was cured by replacing the rubber mount in the front and retorquing. May not be the same problem as mine made a "clunk" under hard shifting, but it is another idea.

...versus...
Not necessarily. I used a vacuum pump going into a jar to pull the old fluid out.
Are these two different
