Default Oil Filter Question

I just changed my oil.
I always change the filter but I'm curious as to why my '69's 350 calls for 5 qts oil w/filterchange and 4 qts oil without filter change.
That doesn't make sense as the filter only holds not even 1/2 qt of oil.
The long Filter holds 16 ounces.

I hear U Joesepe..

I would suggest puting in 4.5 quarts & run it for a few minutes. After shutdown, check oil after 5 minutes or so and see what the dipstick says.

Hope all is well! At least the snow is Gone...

Once the paper in the filter becomes saturated it will not hold a qt of oil but its close, and a little more is better than a less. Ever fell how heavy the old filter is when you take it off?

Joe,
In 1969 was it a PF25 or PF35?

Thanks for the replies,Guys
I'm just curious on the Qt difference.
Manual says:
5 qts w/filter change
4 Qts without filter change.
Before I had my headers I used a long AC and it held 16 ounces on a fill to the top before the install.
The small filter must hold 13 or so ounces of oil.
Where's the other 16-19 ounces if you change the oil without the filter?

Good point Wayne but it's also heavy when you fill the filter before installing.
Should be heavier with dirt when taking the old one off.

I've never seen any oil come down when taking the filter off?
