Just burnt up my 700r4 and im not happy
Ive finally worked all the buggs out of it too, running perfect,so ive been running it up and down the street to fix the little stuff and make sure everything was ok. And i noticed it wasnt going into overdrive,so i turned around to come back and check a few things i adjusted the tv cable again and pulled back down the street and now i had no third by the time i got to the end of the street and turned around now i only have 1st.So all the way back to the house its slipping out of 1st ,you let off it goes back in get on it and it just slips. The tranny only had 66,000 on it ,and it was spotless inside,oh well i guess im pulling it back out and either look for another one or rebuild this one.Oh i did pull a couple of good holeshots with it before all this started :D maybe she just couldnt handle it.Anybody have any good ideas, ill go pull the pan and check.

Pat:
Sorry to hear about the tranny :( . All I ever hear about is 700R4s breaking. My buddy broke 2 in his S10 that only had a mild 305 before he switched to a TH350. I believe Norval went through 3 (extreme case) before he switched. Now that you mention it another one of my friends has an S10 with a 350 in it and his truck is in the garage as we speak with, you guessed it, tranny problems. FYI souping up S10s must be the thing to do around my area :) .
I know the overdrive and low 1st gear is nice on the 700R4 but as far as performance usage is concerned I truely believe there are better trannys.
Once again, sorry to hear about the tranny...I'm waiting for mine to blow up one of these days if it makes you feel any better :D

Maybe slamming it to the floor and spinning through 1st gear into 2nd might have had something to do with it :D

Pat, go NAPA or find a local tranny parts distrib in your area....buy the parts indicated for troubles, and do your own mods as in the ASTG site on the web here.....Automatic Transmission Service Group.....
do ALL the recommended mods, replace the clutches...especially 3/4 pack...and the 2/4 band....know it's right, then reinstall....
frankly all you need is snap ring pliars...tips and direction to change...like mine...
and a screwdriver....pliars...just not as bad as thought....
frankly the worst part is holding that damn heavy case up on end with tailshaft down and work on it....those large C clamps the tranny guys have are handy, no question....

Was it a stock tranny? They're pretty weak puppies.
With your setup I wouldn't do anything less than a Level 2 performance unit...

Pat, just wish I'd have did a 200 4r but did not know of them even existing back 5+ years ago....can't win....figgered if the 700 was good eough for C4's a beefed version would work fine for me....RONG!!!!
junk from word go....thing is, I have NO first hand expereinces to say the 200 is necessarily any better...but then again my 700 ran about 4 years under heavy enough slamming shifts in my '72 here...no towing though....still think i'ts crappy service....

I already cut the driveshaft for the 700 and made a new corssmember already or otherwise id consider the 200,but i guess when im done with the 700 itll be plenty strong enough.Guess i better go out and start pulling it. Feels like ive been PULLING IT since i started this project. :D

Sorry to hear it. GL with getting a new one. I'd go rebuild...probably cheaper.
There have been some inexpensive ones on ebay recently. Check into it

Bummer Pat. When you pull it build it so it's bulletproof. You've got a lot of horsies there and you don't want to make tranny rebuilding a career. Good luck.

ive had good luck with the 700 r4 in my astro van- i got 257,000 out of it before it took a dump- its great in the vette-- they say most failures are from the tv not being adjusted correctly- maby its just the pump in yours--keep us posted-carl
