"NEW" 1973 Chrome Leading Edge Grilles...
Went to a Corvette swap meet today and saw where someone is reproducing these grilles-yeah, they were plastic and about $85 bucks each, but for a one-year only item they did look sharp-I just wonder how long the "plastic" chrome will stand up to aging, weather, etc before it dull, peels, or fades. They did look good, though

If the car was your DD then they would prolly not last long. But if they stay in a garage for most of the week then they should last awhile. That chrome plating does a pretty good job helping to protect that plastic. For $85 I would get them.

Abought 5 years ago a guy came into Vette Products while I was there and bought a set of plastic grilles for his 74 for $50. They had the 73's for the sme price. Plastics are used on most production cars for the last 10-15 years and they hold up very well. If I needed new grilles I would replace them with the plastic ones instead of paying big $$ for used crappy ones. At that time they were asking $200 for one used grille and it was messed up.

That sounds pretty fair and would last for awhile I am sure. But I would rather have a real one. However they are quite expensive and seem to be going up in price. Ebay is always an option

I'd been looking for grills for a couple years... had open backorders at a couple vendors waiting for one of them to get something, anything.
I finally got some of the plastic ones late last year. They do look good.
I'm still refinishing the Vette so they are not installed yet. It is not a daily driver and hopefully they will stay looking good for years to come.
Because of my experience trying to find them... if you see them get them while you can.

This was a problem for me - for a while. Over ten years back, I was driving
my friends 73. I went to park it at work, and noticed (last second) that a steel
beam was sticking out of the ground. I jambed the brakes to stop, and the
front end dove down to contact the beam with the left grill. I promised to
replace it, but never seemed to have the money back then. Pretty stupid to
wait, since the metal grills were available back then. Recently, I asked if
he wanted a plastic one. He didn't want to go plastic, so I looked in Ebay
for a while. I found a pair cheap. They were old and original - lost the chrome
edge a ways back. I bought them for him - but he has not replaced the
broken one yet. I want to take the 'new' used grill back and rework the front
edges with some JB Weld and chrome paint.
While searching, I also saw some NOS 73 grills on Ebay - but they are close
to the price of the elusive center grill.

Hi Paul,
I bought a set of the plastic repo grills in 1990 and had them on the car up until last year. They still look like new, minus the unavoidable rock chips.
I found a NOS GM drivers side grill on eBay, and Lyle C. from Ohio had an almost new passenger side grill for sale.
There's no way on earth you would fool anybody with the plastic grills as the ribs are far too thick, but for a driver they're great.
I also found a center grill at an outfit in Georgia who had three in stock. If I knew then what they would be worth today I would have bought all three. Duh!
See you at the Nationals?

Paul...
I saw your Yellow 80' at the Lima Corvette Swap Meet this weekend. It looked great and I saw many others checking it out. Did you have any luck selling it?

For a daily driver, you can get away with cleaning up and painting the stock grilles black then going over the edges with a silver paint stick. Joe

I saw those grills. I bought one of the 74 grills for my 73. Put it on in 5 min. everything fit and lined up perfect. Wish factory parts fit that good. I found several small pieces I'd been looking for at Lima. It was a nice drive in the vette too.
