Default POR-15 = no fun... but worth it.

5 hours (not including sandblasting time) on my back with a brush and can... I can't wait for my whirley-jig, 35'X60' shop, and paint booth!

Really looks great the work you are doing and a nice area you live in the Dallas area. My brother also lives in Southlake.

Yeah, Southlake is pretty nice. I just bought a house in Flower Mound though due to the local traffic and a new job. It's much easier getting to various places from the northside of Grapevine lake.

What are you going to spray over the POR with, as it needs to be coated doesn't it . Looks great, I will be sprayin the underneath of mine in a few weeks as well with POR and a semi gloss black from Eastwood to block it from the UV rays.

The firewall was shot with semi-gloss 4 hours after the POR-15 was applied (just before the POR cured). The wheel wells will be roughed up and undercoated after the car is painted. The rest will be left alone. I only topcoat POR-15 where it is exposed to UV light and even then I don't worry about it too much.

The frame of this car has been finished for several months now with no topcoat over POR-15 and it still looks like it did on day one. While the frame is kept indoors or covered, it has been exposed to sunlight for at least 40 hours here and there with no color change.

As a side note, the body now goes to the plastic media blaster before being painted. At that point only the firewall gets covered. I have this procedure for two reasons. The first is that it's much easier to paint over cured paint than it is over cured POR-15. Second, the factory blacked out the firewall and cowl after the car was painted and no body color should be visible on these parts after the car is complete. The underside of the car was not painted at the factory, but body color overspray would be all over the underside. This is my preferred balance between factory correct and "the way I think it should have been done."

If you are like you will wind up with the POR15 all over everything and have to wear it off. I had a spot on my face for a few days after I got done.

I had a spot here and there when I was done on those few areas I had exposed. A scrub down with paint thinner before it dries takes it right off though.

It looks great! I just used por-15 on my frame and I am very happy with the results. I just hope that it sticks to my frame at least half as good as it sticks to my skin......I had to dang near rub off the first layer of skin to get it off!

Um - yup - abrasives take it off.
I used 60 grit sandpaper to clean this off:

So - thats your Catalina ? At first I thought it was a C3 - squinting to figure out where the body/frame looks like "that". :lolg:

You guys must not believe in taking a break from your work to clean up. All you need is some paint thinner before it dries.

Hehe. Yep, that's the Cat body.

how long do you have before it's too late to top coat? I have to do my car trailer, I have POR15 and their chassis black.

Depending on the temp and humidity, 4- 6 hours after applying is the best time. Just after it is no longer tacky to the touch of a lightly dragging clean finger. If you wait till it's cured then you have to sand the surface for the paint to adhere.
