Default What does smoke at WOT mean?

Never seen exhaust smoke from the red rat before, but happened to look in the rear view mirror today after punching it to pass a truck, and saw a puff of blue smoke black there that looked to be mine. Is that normal, like maybe just from the suddenly very rich mixture when the secondaries opened up?

That's probably what it is. Probably isn't anything to worry about, sort of like when you see a deisel semi accellerating, more fuel is going in than is getting burned.

Unburnt fuel is going to be black isn't it? Blue smoke is oil.

My guess is that your guides and/or valve seals are worn. At WOT you are having some oil blow by the seals. Of course, that should be occurring most every time that you punch it.

What does smoke at WOT mean? On mine it is caused by a lack of traction due to sudden acceleration and the smoke is from the tires. :steering: But on a serious note, smoke from extra fuel would be black. Blue smoke is from oil. It is probable your valve seals as mentioned above :iagree: Not a real serious problem at this point.

Blue smoke is from oil. If you get a puff of smoke after starting, then it will be the valve guide seals. If you get it during WOT, then start looking into a set of rings. Be gentle with the engine, keep an eye on your oil level.

I would question ones ability to accurately determine the color of the smoke after "punching" a 427/390 :D The smoke should have been waaaaay back there.
