?? for 700r4 conversion
For anyone that has switched to a 700r4 or ever 200r4 (4 speed autos) What did you do about the shifter?
It is meant to be a 3 speed and I need options for shifters for when I get around to my tranny installation so I can use all 4 gears effectively. Someone told me that I can keep the stock shifter but I wouldnt be able to shift don the 1st gear if I needed to. I also heard that the 82 shifter had a 4 speed auto in it and I could use that in place of mine. I'm considering anything, even aftermarket. Please post your solutions.

When I first did my conversion off a Muncie 4 spd car...I just wedged with a wood piece it into the 3/4 position...and ran the 3/4 shift rod to the tranny...
never did have any lockout or safety....move that lever at 89 mph and it's into reverse or park....so just don't DO it!!!
not wonderful, but no other choice really...nothig practical anyway....
I have an auto shifter and cable assy I should play with...but then I would loose my Hurst handle and the 8 ball....I refuse to do that...so...

you can get kits from several places, like eckler's that will convert you stock shifter to be able to shift into all gears and comes with a new lense to indicate all gears P R N D 3 2 1 and is easy to install. how soon do you want to do this, i have a whosesale deal with the people who all the other companies buy there stuff from and also seel the complete setups with tranny for the conversion.....but either way the kit is easy to install and works great. :chevy

You don't need a kit for 77-81 Corvettes.
Take a rat tail file and remove enough from the factory shifter to give you one more detent lower than the exisiting first gear stop and install a shift plate from an 1982 Corvette. Takes aboutr 20 minutes and doesn't cost very much.

Re: ?? for 700r4 conversion (redwingvette)
I didn't do anything to mine at all. I can adjust mine so the detent (stop) is for either 4th (OD) or 3rd (D). I suppose I could file in another notch and have a stop for 4th and 3rd.
Right now I have it adjusted to where it stops when I pull down at 4th, and then I push he button down to get 3rd, 2nd, 1st.
Cost - $0

I just changed the detent on my stock shifter. The detent came in kit from BTO but its made by a company called Shiftworks. the kit also included a new shift lever for the trans and a shifter indicator plate with lighted capability and all the correct positions P,R,N,D,3,2,1.

Bseery and I share the same system. Crude but effective -- and looks original.
Redwingvette, all you're getting for $90 is the detent plate, the indicator, and the brackets.

Re: ?? for 700r4 conversion (page62)
Thx for the ideas everyone, I'll check each of them out and see which one fits my needs best, I'll probably end up filing away part of the old one and if that doesnt work right I'll try something else.

Thanks page69 for the info. I didn't know what was included. I have the engine (pulled it out to put the Performer RPM Heads on), trans, and shifter out. 200R4 will be delivered on Friday. Hope to have it back together by May.

i filed my shifter farther down so i can get first gear, and left the original plate so from inside it still looks stock.
