Default 78 Differential

What is the size of the rear differential in a 78? (ring and pinion) is it a Dana 44 if not will a Dana 44 bolt in?
Thanks for any info

It is a GM rear end.... not Dana. I believe in 80 they started using Dana rear ends.... either 36 or 44 not quite sure. in the C4's they used a couple of different Dana's depending on options

In stock form you'll be pushing things if you get on the car. You can beef them up though. Check Tom's differentials out of LA. They can sell you a complete racing differential or you can build your own if you have the tools.
Some things you can do is to replace the cast bearing caps with fitted steel ones, replace the hex head screws with socket head cap screws, check the posi for the HD clutches and spider gears, radius the posi carrier to remove sharp edges that could cause cracking,"tune" the posi for better performance. Install cold stabilized axles for strength.
Good luck

Thanks gtr that was helpful I haven't messed around with on of these rears yet. I just want to make sure that it has potential and I am not wasting my time. I picked a 4L80E tranny to go behind my new 383 and I would like to pop 3.70's in there. I messed up the last 383 a 140 mph :steering: Thanks for your help.
